Core Principles: Respect and Mindfulness
There are two core principles when wearing Thai amulets: Respect and Mindfulness.
True Taboos
- Height Rule: Amulets should be worn above the waist, preferably on the neck. Placing them in pants pockets is considered disrespectful.
- Intimacy: Remove your amulet before participating in sexual activities. Place it on a clean table or shelf.
- Moral Conduct: Avoid swearing at parents or engaging in criminal acts. Amulets are meant to protect good people.
Common Myths
- The Bathroom Rule: You can wear your amulet in the bathroom. It is a natural human necessity, and the Buddha is compassionate.
- Period Taboo: Women can wear amulets during their period. It is a natural biological process and not "unclean."
- Sleeping: You can sleep while wearing one, but it's usually discouraged to prevent damaging the case or accidental choking.
Maintenance Tips
- Water Protection: Even with waterproof cases, try to avoid wearing them in the shower.
- Placement: When not wearing, keep it on a high, clean surface.
