Hui Neng, the Sixth Patriarch: History and Practice

Biography and Lineage Overview

Hui Neng was born in the 12th year of Emperor Taizong’s Zhen‑guan era (638 CE) in Fan‑yang (present‑day Zhuozhou, Hebei). Because his father served in Guangdong, the family was registered in Xin‑zhou (today’s Xinxing County, Guangdong). He lost his father at age three, and his mother raised him through fire‑wood gathering, leaving his early life in deep poverty.

While living in the mountains of Guangdong, he happened upon the Diamond Sutra, read it once and attained sudden insight. He then traveled to Luoyang to study under the Fifth Patriarch Hongren. Hongren, amused, called him a “barbarian,” yet bestowed the robe and the Platform Sutra upon Hui Neng, establishing the cornerstone of the sudden‑awakening doctrine. Hui Neng’s teachings later spread from Nanhua Temple (today’s Si‑hui, Guangdong) and laid the foundation of the Southern School of Chan.
