Buddha or God?
While widely referred to as the "Four-Faced Buddha," Phra Phrom is actually Lord Brahma, the Creator God in the Hindu Trinity. He is honored in Buddhism because he embodies the "Four Sublime States of Mind": Loving-kindness, Compassion, Sympathizing joy, and Equanimity.
He is the god of creation and destiny, overseeing the prosperity and well-being of the human realm.
The Significance of the Four Faces
Each face of Phra Phrom represents a different dimension of protection and blessing (usually worshipped in a clockwise direction):
- First Face (Front): For career, success, studies, and general peace.
- Second Face (Clockwise): For love, relationships, and interpersonal charm.
- Third Face (Clockwise): For wealth, stable income, and windfall luck.
- Fourth Face (Clockwise): For health, family, and children.
The Eight Hands & Sacred Tools
Phra Phrom has eight hands holding various symbolic items, such as:
- Scripture: Representing Knowledge and Wisdom.
- Conch Shell: Representing Blessings.
- Scepter: Representing Achievement and Power.
- Prayer Beads: Representing Cycles and Mindfulness.
- Water Pot (Kamandalu): Representing the fulfillment of all wishes.
How to Properly Pray to Phra Phrom
Phra Phrom is known to be very just and highly values integrity.
- Clockwise Worship: Start from the front and move clockwise.
- Offerings: He loves yellow marigold flowers and incense.
- Vows and Returning: If your wish is granted, it is essential to fulfill your vow (Kae Bon). Traditional ways include hiring Thai dancers to perform or offering wooden elephants.
